Celebrating 60 Soulful Years: Royal Studios
Thursday Sept. 14, 2107
11:00am - noon
Gulch III, at the Westin Nashville Hotel
Royal Studios owner Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell is celebrating 60 years of the studio that is arguably the home of Memphis Soul. Built as a theater in the early 1900s, Royal became the home of premier Memphis Soul label Hi Records and the Hi Rhythm section under the guidance of the late producer Willie Mitchell. The historic studio produced hits by R&B pioneers Al Green and Ann Peebles, and as one of the oldest operating studios in the world Royal is also a beacon for contemporary roots musicians like Americana luminary Jim Lauderdale, who recorded there with instrumentation from North Mississippi Allstars' Luther and Cody Dickinson.
